Expressing ourselves in a creative way is said to keep the mind and spirit young at heart.
Creativity is central to our health and well being. That is the conclusion of a recent study at George Washington University that has been assessing the health effects on seniors older than 65.
The seniors that took part in the study, participated in music, dance and arts and craft programs. The research found that over a period of time, these people were less prone to illness, doctor’s visits and depression too. http://www.nea.gov/resources/accessibility/CnA-Rep4-30-06.pdf
The more we express our creativity, whether it be writing, art, music, drama dance or any other creative endeavor, the more fullness and confidence we will have in our lives…
There are many that would say “I’m just not artistic or the creative type” but the truth is, everyone and anything can be viewed in an creative way. As soon as you put a restraint on your creativity, like, “I’m just not artistic” you’ve created a negative perspective. You’ve made a decision that might not necessarily have any truth or foundation. That can impact your life with a lost opportunity.
Our self judging mind often stunts and limits our creative expression, or excludes it from our lives. One can live in an artful way with everything… it’s a choice.
The world is but a canvas to the imagination.” — Henry David Thoreau
If you find yourself in a non creative space or you're having a creative block, there lies a foundation and opportunity for a new beginning. We can always turn things around and find a new form of expression if we have a strong desire. Persistence and an open mind are key factors, and can create a different vision or new script.
You can’t just force creativity. You have to take some action and let it flow. These days you don’t even need to take a class…it’s all on the web. Check out YouTube for inspirational videos on almost everything.
Old creative endeavors or hobbies may be stale or in need of a re-think. Sometimes, earlier passions have passed their sell by date and it’s time to move on and find something fresh and new.
Creativity is for everyone. We are all blessed with it in one form or another, some have more, some have less. It might need to be excavated from a deep cavern from within…but it’s there.
Recently, I’ve started to paint abstract art. I’ve turned my garage into a studio and have created a special space where I can make some mess, express myself, and have some fun.
Art doesn’t have to be something that you do perfectly. It is the process and the adventure of just doing it regardless of the outcome. Fun and enjoyment prove you’re on the right path. It doesn’t matter what other people think. Leave perfectionism at the back door.
I’ve been drawn to many creative endeavors over years. Drumming, web design, graphic design, even baking. Most of these at times, involve a tremendous amount of precision and technicality.
Abstract painting on the other hand, is completely opposite. It’s not about getting it right. It’s not about perfection, or coming up with a great result. It is about free expression from within and having fun in the moment.
To think creatively, we must be able to look afresh at what we normally take for granted. ~George Kneller
Why not put some paint on a canvas or start a new creative adventure into the unknown. Something you've been putting off perhaps. Do something different and get out of the box of routine. Take up dancing, writing, music drama or poetry, anything to get into some new creative juices flowing. Challenge yourself and experiment!
There are a million ways to be creative. Explore something new! Good luck.
